Third across the line – and under her own name

Only two boats ahead of us at the Grand Prix finish, rain forecast and wind delivered at the Long Race – and eighth of 155 in the season standings.

Only two boats ahead at the finish

The gun for the 32nd Attersee Grand Prix went on 9 July at ten o’clock sharp, for 78 boats entered and 264 sailors. Under colourful spinnakers the fleet set off on a course of some 32 kilometres: to the first mark at Parschallen, on to Kammer, round a loop between Attersee and Weyregg back to Kammer and finally to the finish off Attersee.

All day the breeze kept building and fading. Only the Tornado of the brothers Christian and Bernhard Eitzinger and the 18-foot skiff of Günther Zieher and his sons crossed the line ahead of us: third on elapsed time, with a young crew on the Libera. On corrected time, where the Yardstick number makes different boat types comparable, that became 31st. That ranking was won, to the surprise of the race committee too, by Günter Novak and his daughter Flora on a Korsar.

Rain forecast, wind delivered

Despite rain in the forecast, the 94th Long Race on 6 August drew a record fleet: 116 boats and 274 sailors on the 34.2-kilometre course. The gun went at seven sharp at the UYCAs starter’s tower, and the fleet headed for Burgau in a light northerly.

Along the way the wind kept changing in strength and direction; from midday it gusted up to 18 knots, around 35 km/h. The rain held off until most of the fleet had reached the finish off the club. On corrected time Klaus Costadedoi won on a Musto Skiff, and Günther Zieher once again took the Blue Riband for the fastest boat on the water. Our result was 44th on corrected time.

New lettering on the hull, eighth overall

In the photographs from 2022 the red stripe along the hull carries the team lettering. In 2021 we were entered under the name of our sponsor, Teekanne; the 2022 Long Distance Challenge results list the boat as Liberté, and that is her name to this day.

In 2022 the series consisted of three races. 31st at the Grand Prix, fifth in the twelve-hour race on 16 July and 44th in the Long Race added up to 728.8 points: eighth among 155 ranked helms.
